Dictatorships have many benefits over democracies. But this isnt for this thread.

There is a quest where you get a panda following you around.

Panda mini pets too but they are very expensive.

The red frog quest in Cantha for rangers after getting your Ranger Insignia in Shing Jea has you using a Panda to track this frog...but the panda neither fights nor gets attacked...you can even just sit back at the beginning and wait for the NPC's to clear the quest for you...I died with my henchies on the bridge near where the quest ended and the npc's finished it for me.

Yeah, the Panda is a sacred animal in China. It would be financial suicide for Anet to allow a panda to be harmed in the game thus eliminating a large portion of their income.

sacred animal? no its not . .. its just symbolic of china and is also an endangered species.

the animal rights groups are the ones that had problems with pandas dying and such in the game. though why they focused on pandas and not any of the other charmable pets we have in game, i have no idea.

the wiki's do not list a mini panda for the reward for that quest, in fact they specifcly list how many mini panda's have been given away, where, and what had to be done to get one.....

unoffical wiki
Quote:
Reward
* 2500 XP
* 100 Gold
* Recurve Bow

Dmg: 11-17 (Requires 4 Marksmanship)
Damage +10% (while Health is above 50%)

from the offical wiki
Quote:
Acquisition

* Japan region
o Guild Wars Championship in Japan top 2 teams (8 members each)
* Taiwan region
o 1~49th signup to help newbies during first two weeks of Nightfall retail (49 were given)
o Nightfall title contest prizes (61 were given)
o GW 1st anniversary wallpaper contest prizes (10 total)
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Miniature_Panda

and again the unoffical

*rolls eyes at all that erroneous research*
You never made a ranger in Factions and did that quest. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/The_Red_Frog

There is a panda pet (NOT MINI pet) used by Sujun in that mission. No where does the guy who you quoted say you get a panda (mini or pet) from the mission. He just said one was in it.

a mini panda would make a hard quest worth it,,,,,,,,, but nothing in the rewards list makes a hard quest worth anything, unless your sofa king we todd ed that looking at digital panda's gets you off ( in which case may i suggest you go get zoo tycoon, or roller coaster tycoon 3 wild - and go nuts.)

Its not political correctness, its actually illegal (as in against the law) in China to depict any violence against panda's. That has nothing to do with political correctness.

This is a similar case with why ID's Wolfenstein 3D was not allowed to use the Swastika in their video game, due to Germany's law against it.

It shows a company's sensitivity to other cultures and their views.

China has the world's fastest growing economy and from what I hear they will surpass USA soon. It's only a matter of time. So if China is "ruining" the world with their "trash" they sure as damn hell are doing an excellent job about it.

In all seriousness Arenanet went way too far with this.

Now I'm sure China has it's beleifs and or customs about Pandas, but that's just rediculous. I have a respect for people's beleifs and customs, but this is a virtual game with a virtual pet. That's just plain rediculous.

I don't see what's so ridiculous with complying with rules and regulation.

Yep, the law is the law.

And... well, as a political science expert don't bash if you don't know what you are talking about.

Wow, I missed this post. Like you, I was so sorely disappointed when ArenaNet took away my red-crowned crane, which really exists in the real world, and turned it into... Well, I don't know what the heck it is now.

I am Asian and I know the lore behind these cranes. They are considered extremely lucky animals, and they are on the endangered species list. Then again, almost all of the animals that you can keep for pets are somewhat endangered or at least protected by governments. I mean, you can't just shoot an American crocodile with a Florida game warden standing next to you.

As for it dying, well, that's pretty sad that the animal rights groups (or whatever) had to step in and force a change.

We can't have a Panda pet for the same reason the Flags in PvP aren't American flags. Could you imagine casting SF on the Flagrunner and how many people would get offended?
Sarcasm, by the way.
